DOHA, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) — QatarEnergy announced on Sunday the plan to develop a new solar power project, which is expected to more than double Qatar’s overall solar energy production to 4,000 megawatts by 2030.
Under the new project, a new solar power plant, with a production capacity of 2,000 megawatts, will be built in the Dukhan area, approximately 80 kilometers west of the capital Doha, QatarEnergy said in a statement.
At a press conference in Doha, Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Qatar’s minister of state for energy affairs and CEO of QatarEnergy, stressed that the project serves as part of the country’s effort to develop sustainability projects, diversify electricity production, and reduce CO2 emissions by more than 4.7 million tons per annum.
The new plant will join QatarEnergy’s existing solar power assets, including the 800-megawatt Al-Kharsaah solar power plant, which was inaugurated in 2022, and two upcoming projects in Ras Laffan and Mesaieed industrial cities, which total 875 megawatts in production capacity and are set to begin operations later this year. ■
